Come to McAbee for an activity that is easy, fun and educational. The McAbee Fossil Site offers you a hands-on approach to discovering the natural history of BC. Our philosophy is unique. We believe in the hands-on approach where you are given the opportunity to participate at a level you are comfortable with. You can climb the short distance to the fossil beds to dig out your own unique specimen. You are guaranteed to find your own unique fossils to take home with you.*

The McAbee Fossil Site offers educational fossil digs at our "Eocene Age" fossil site near Cache Creek, BC. The Macabee site is approximately 51 million years old. Over 70 plant varieties have been found, including over 55 Broadleaves and 20 Conifer species. Both Ginko varieties are also present. Countless insect species can be found such as tiny flies, wasps, leafhoppers, etc. The fish Eohiodon (Mooneye) is also present.

The digging season runs from May to October. Our friendly and qualified on-site guides offer information on the geological history of the area as well as directing you to where you will be able to find your own unique fossils. Guides are available daily from 9:00 -3:00 during the high season in July/August. Drop-ins welcome during July/August. Please call ahead to book your guided dig during the off-season. Bus tours are welcome and need to be pre-booked. To make the most of your day, it is suggested you arrive by 2:00 pm at the latest.

Rock hammers and bags are provided. Hard hats and goggles are supplied upon request. Please wear closed toed shoes. A sun hat, sunblock, and a water bottle are highly recommended as temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees C. Digs are cancelled during heavy rainfall as the site becomes too dangerous.

The McAbee Fossil Beds are easily accessed off the Trans Canada Hwy 13 kms east of Cache Creek. For more information on the location of McAbee, please click here. A large parking lot is available for leisure and bus traffic. A 10 minute walk on a user-friendly road gives visitors access to the fossil beds. If you are interested in acquiring a sample of a McAbee fossil, but not wanting to participate in the dig, McAbee fossil samples can be available for purchase on site if you request this beforehand.

* Please be aware that if your find is scientifically significant, we will request you donate the fossil to the Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC.
